Strengthening the region's supply strategy

Ekan Management developed a supply strategy together with the region for higher redundancy and robustness in the region's supply chain, and strengthened crisis preparedness.

The client: The customer is a medium-sized Swedish region which, together with other regions in Sweden, has found itself with partially new conditions after the covid pandemic.

The client's challenge: During the pandemic, deficiencies were revealed in the healthcare supply chains, both at the national and regional level. Based on this, the region identified a need to strengthen the redundancy in the supply chain in critical areas such as consumables, textiles, food, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and certain medical equipment. The client also saw an increased need to strengthen its work with preparedness for peacetime crises, during heightened alert and in times of war.

Our solution: Ekan Management developed a supply strategy together with the region for higher redundancy and robustness in the region's supply chain, as well as strengthened crisis preparedness. This was done by mapping existing supply chains, environmental monitoring of other regions in Sweden and of municipalities in the region. The basis was based on national investigations from the National Board of Health and Welfare as well as guidance from MSB (The Agency for Social Protection and Preparedness).

The result: The basis resulted in an improvement plan with seven strategic measures that the region needs to work on over the next two years to achieve redundancy and robustness. The improvement plan included management of inventory, logistics flows, system support, optimization, governance, responsibility and collaboration. Ekan also identified other benefits and long-term effects that the implemented improvements are expected to provide.
